A large facet of our communication is video. Representatives often wish to share their comments from debate on Facebook or YouTube. Some legislators put out a weekly legislative update video for their constituents. It was really fun getting to work with these legislators one-on-one.

My video experience from JLMC 307/308 as well as work for Student Government really helped prepare me for this part of my internship. Even though I was working with Sony Vegas, most of my skills from Adobe Premier transferred over.

Here are some examples of what I put out on a regular basis.

Starting after Funnel Week, I put out clips from the House live stream nearly every day.

Rep. Phyllis Thede speaks before the House about Dr. Dianne Glave as part of a presentation for Black History Month.

Rep. Molly Donahue calls on the House to oppose HF 2504, the Anti-Semitism bill, which Democrats believed failed to protect Iowans of all religions.

Rep. Liz Bennett shares testimonials of victims of LGBTQ+ hate crimes as part of her call to the House to support HF 2503, the Defense of Justification Bill, also known as the Gay and Trans Panic Defense Bill.

Rep. Molly Donahue presents some of the possible negative side effects of under funding Iowa’s public schools in opposition of an amendment to SF 2142, Supplemental State Aid, which lowered state aid from 3% to 2.3%.

Every week some representatives would release a weekly legislative update. Rep. Bruce Bearinger, as well as the Black Hawk Caucus, consisting of Reps. Timi Brown-Powers, Bob Kressig, Ras Smith and Dave Williams.
